March 21st will see the annual Terry Fox Run held in Danang at the Montgomerie Links Golf Course. The aim of this non-competitive charity event is to raise awareness and money for cancer research.
Last year over 1500 participants helped raise over 50,000,000VND for a cancer research facility in Hanoi. This year organizers are hoping to get more participants and raise more money. The Terry Fox Run is a free event, there are no entry or attendance fees, participants and spectators are encouraged to donate money to this great cause.
There will be beverage stands set up that sell drinks for no more than 10,000vnd and food stands including Mr. Pizza, Mega Star, and Doco Donuts that sell food for 20,000vnd or less. For entertainment there will be a Vietnamese Rock Band, a Filipino Band, face painting, golf games, and much more.
Who was Terry Fox?
At the age of 19, Canadian Terry Fox was diagnosed with cancer in his right leg, his leg was amputated above the knee. He was so angry at how little money was spent on cancer research that he decided to raise money by running across Canada, his aim was to raise $1 for every Canadian, at the time Canada’s population was 24 million.
Terry made it more than half way across Canada, more than 5,300km, the equivalent of Saigon to Hanoi four and a half times! He was forced to stop because cancer had spread to his lungs. Terry Fox died in June 1981.
