It seems that every city in Vietnam has its own computer street and Danang is no exception. Ham Nghi street, right in the centre of town is the place to go to by any computer related hardware, more on where to get software later. Without a doubt the biggest place and the place with the biggest reputation is Phi Long Plaza.

Phi Long is a good place to go for variety of products as well as a variety of brand names. Downstairs seems to focus on desktops and printers, the second floor is dedicated to laptops, the third floor is a TV and home entertainment showroom. There is an internet cafe on the sixth floor.

While Phi Long is the biggest computer shop in town, it is not necessarily the best. There are dozens of small shops on Ham Nghi, and also a handful on Nguyen Van Linh. The smaller shops have less choice but in my opinion better service, when you return to the smaller places you will likely deal with the same person each time, building a better relationship and getting better service.

In terms of getting good service I recommend Nuoc Viet Computer which is located opposite Phi Long Plaza, it is always quiet and the staff are helpful and friendly. As well as buying a laptop from Nuoc Viet I have had other things serviced or repaired and even viruses removed from hard disks without being charged.

For those of you who have spent time in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City you will be familiar with Co-op Mart, it is a very Vietnamese style supermarket chain. Co-op mart Danang has been open for a couple of weeks and I was pleasantly surprised by what the supermarket had in stock as well as the other stores that are in same complex.

Except for the lack of a Cinema I would say that the new Co-op Mart centre in Danang has more to offer than the Big C complex. Both Lotteria and KFC have new branches and there is also a Fahasa on the third floor. The floor is also home to a large bowling alley, at least 10 lanes and a games arcade much bigger than the one in Big C.

There is also a food court on the third floor with mostly Vietnamese food available and a place serving freshly squeezed juices. Pappa Roti also has a small stall here and I was very satisfied with their bun, billed as “the father of all buns” it lived up to the hype, the donut like bun was delicious.

I also believe that the new Co-op Mart in Danang is home to the city’s first electronic motorbike parking. Instead of the standard paper ticket and chalk number on your bike, you are given a barcoded ticket which is swiped and includes your licence plate number, it is then swiped when you leave, parking costs 1,000 VND.

Shopping at Co-op Mart is a much more Vietnamese experience than Big C or Metro, I got quite a few stares and giggles. I think the upside of this is that some things are cheaper, the product range is very similar to what is available at Big C, Big C is cleaner and more spacious though.

The new Oceans is located at 30/7 Tran Phu Street, it is between Le Duan and Quang Trung streets.

Oceans is a small shop which specializes in western food supplies. They have a small collection of things that are hard to find and that are not available at Metro or Big C.

For example, they have nutella, cereals, muesli, cheese, flour, herbs, spices, almonds and a range of other ingredients.

A lot of the products that Oceans supplies comes in large quantities. If you ask them they can re-bag products for smaller purchases.

I assumed it was small and only run on Saturday nights, I was wrong.

I have been to the market a couple of times now and it is definitely worth a visit, it is usually fully set up by 6pm and runs right around the supermarket complex, across the road in front of the park entrance and quite a way up Hung Vuong street. Le Duan also has some stalls selling on the side of the road near the Fahasa book store.

This is as you would expect a very Vietnamese market, foreigners are welcome but not a target of hassle or ridiculous overpricing. For me the best thing about this market is the atmosphere, it is a great place to people watch.

As with any place where Vietnamese people gather there are a number of food stalls which are an addition to the permanent street food sellers which call this corner home. The market seems to run every night but I imagine that Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights would be the liveliest.

When I first came to Danang there was no Big C, the next best thing was Bai Tho Mart which is now close to closing down. Big C has given Danang a focal point, a city center, a meeting place for young people and best of all an English language cinema. When people refer to Big C they are generally referring to the whole shopping complex not just the supermarket.

The shopping center which is officially known as Vinh Trung Plaza, also includes, Lotteria, Highlands Coffee, various cheap clothing, mobile phone and watch shops and the newly opened KFC.

My biggest criticism of Vinh Trung Plaza is the design, when the place gets even a little crowded trying to move up and down the one escalator or to get into and out of the lone elevator is a long, shoulder to shoulder process. I am told most Korean Shopping Centers follow a similar design. I advise going shopping or seeing a movie on any evening except Friday, Saturday or Sunday when the crowds become unbearable.

Big C Supermarket will actually deliver for free if you live within 15kms and have a shopping bill in excess of 500,000 VND, this can be very handy instead of trying to balance everything on your bike and maneuvering through traffic. Be aware that they don’t deliver fresh food or food from the delicatessen because they need to be stored in particular conditions.

From the Big C Vietnam website:
Big C offers a complete one-stop-shopping for Vietnamese customers: over 50.000 items in each store, from fresh food to groceries, from clothing to home decor, as well as electronics such as household electrical appliances and audio-visual appliances, all at low price.
Everyday, our professional bakers produce 100% of the bread range that became a reference within Vietnam: more than 50% of our customers shop in our bakery!
Big C is a good neighbor, supporting local events, making donation to school, helping poor people.
Big C employs 500 workers in average by store.
