They provide western standard medical care with foreign trained personnel and all staff are English speaking.

The clinic has a fully equipped ambulance on stand-by 24 hours a day, to respond to the emergency need of patients. All ambulances have well trained staff doctors and nurses on board to provide treatment on route to hospital.

If you don’t have much faith in the Vietnamese hospitals or you can’t speak much Vietnamese then the family medical practice is the place to go. It is a clean, well run facility better than standards of many western medical clinics.

It is on Pham Van Dong Street, quite a long walk from the beach but a manageable walk from the city centre and the riverfront.

The Blue Snow Hotel is a large nice looking place, it is very well appointed inside and has a decent restaurant on the ground floor, buffet breakfast is 50,000 VND. The staff are nice and friendly, good English is spoken. At the moment the hotel is holding a few events to promote their recent opening.

Rooms are priced from $35 USD to 90 USD for foreigners, that’s right there is dual pricing at this hotel, Vietnamese prices range from 450,000 VND to 1,000,000 VND. The double pricing policy is so blatant that they have room rates advertised at reception and then they wrote down the higher price that I was expected to pay. I know other hotels do this but the guests don’t usually know the price difference between foreigners and locals.

Ham Nghi street, right in the centre of town is the place to go to by any computer related hardware, more on where to get software later. Without a doubt the biggest place and the place with the biggest reputation is Phi Long Plaza.

Phi Long is a good place to go for variety of products as well as a variety of brand names. Downstairs seems to focus on desktops and printers, the second floor is dedicated to laptops, the third floor is a TV and home entertainment showroom. There is an internet cafe on the sixth floor.

While Phi Long is the biggest computer shop in town, it is not necessarily the best. There are dozens of small shops on Ham Nghi, and also a handful on Nguyen Van Linh. The smaller shops have less choice but in my opinion better service, when you return to the smaller places you will likely deal with the same person each time, building a better relationship and getting better service.

In terms of getting good service I recommend Nuoc Viet Computer which is located opposite Phi Long Plaza, it is always quiet and the staff are helpful and friendly. As well as buying a laptop from Nuoc Viet I have had other things serviced or repaired and even viruses removed from hard disks without being charged.

In Danang the place to go is quite easy to find and in my experience it is one of the most well run government offices in Vietnam, so quick and easy.

To get copies of passports, degrees, certificates, police checks or any other official document notarized you need to bring your original document plus 2 clear copies to the notarization office, they will keep one of your copies. The office is on the ground floor, the first office on the right as you go through the gates, you can be in and out in as little as five minutes.

The helpful and polite staff speak a little English and seem quite accustomed to dealing with foreign customers. The fee is usually quite small, 2,000 VND per copy in my experience, it may be more depending on the document, but not much more.

The building pictured is currently under construction and is designed to house most if not all of Danang’s government departments. This in theory should make it easy and faster to get any government related paperwork sorted in one location with, hopefully improved communication and faster process times between departments. This building is located on Tran Phu Street, near opposite the Bach Dang Tennis Courts and Sen Cafe.

Tuy Huong Fashion is a womens’ tailor located in downtown Danang, is has a reputation for excellent quality and highly stylish womens’ clothes. The shop is named after Miss Tuy Huong, who along with her daughter and chief designer, Nguyet Truc, run this shop and help make the customer feel at home. Tuy Huong is accustomed to dealing with foreign customers, Truc speaks a little English, both mother and daughter are fluent French speakers.

Danang does not really have much of a reputation among foreigners as place to come a get clothes tailor made, Hoi An is the place to go, why? Hoi An has the reputation and in many ways it is easier to get clothes made in Hoi An, all of the shops have someone who can speak English and lure in the potential foreign customers. It is also very fast to get clothes made in Hoi An, in some cases just a matter of hours. Finally, Hoi An is a nice quaint little place to hang out while waiting for your tailor to whip you up a new wardrobe, a good place to chill.

For all that Hoi An has got going for it, I avoid the place like the plague, I especially avoid getting anything tailor made, whether it be clothes or shoes. Quality products are very difficult to find in Hoi An, everything is designed for backpackers or tourists, people passing through who want the quick fix rather than the best quality. One of the reasons I love Danang is that it doesn’t exist for the sole purpose of catering to and making money from tourists, foreigners are an oddity that Danang locals put up with as they go about their business.

Like so many other shops in Danang, Tuy Huong Fashion, is concerned about satisfying the customer and producing good quality products in order to build a reputation amongst the locals. This place has a great reputation, by Vietnamese standards their prices are higher than average, but the quality of work is second to none. The service here is also very friendly unlike the rough pull you by the hand tactics that you may experience in Hoi An.

Tuy Huong Fashion produces a range of clothing, from wedding dresses to evening gowns, business suits to summer dresses. They have a large collection of custom designed dresses that you can choose from or modify to make a truly unique garment. The time you spend waiting for your clothes to be made will be worth it as you are sure to enjoy wearing these designs for years to come.

I received a comment this week, on my review of Vietnamese Home Restaurant, that made a valid point about the level of English of most, not all, waiters in Vietnam. The argument was that people who can speak English well have more job opportunities than people who are most likely to become waiters. It is true, why would someone with a good command of English become a waiter?

It is no secret that waitstaff here in Vietnam and indeed around the world are not paid well. I would estimate that other than at big resorts most waiters in Danang would be earning less than 1,000,000 VND a month ($56 USD), the rate is probably closer to 500,000 VND. On top of this is the fact that staff in some cases are expected to work upto 12 hours a day, 7 days a week with 1 day off a month if they are lucky.

Tipping, which can provide waiters in some countries with a substantial potion of their income, is not common practice in Vietnam. I have to confess that I am not much of a tipper, it is not part of my culture, I think it is up to restaurant owners to pay their staff well. Having said that I no longer apply the rules of my country to Vietnam and tip good service, a good effort or in an attempt to train waitstaff.

Most of what I consider to be poor service in Vietnam results in a lack of common sense or cultural understanding, not in a lack of English. All of the following situations I have experienced first hand and I believe that a conscientious waiter would make the small adjustments needed to secure his job and more than likely increase his income significantly through tips, promotions or other job offers.

A waitress knoked a customer’s spoon off the table as she was putting a bowl of soup, she then picked the spoon off the floor and put into the customers bowl, the customer reacted angrily.

Three waiters stand in the corner of a restaurant, look and point at and giggle while watching a customer eat.

A waiter brings a dish which is different to what the customer clearly pointed to in the menu, the dish is usually more expensive than the original order.

A waiter with dish in hand, walks past the customer who ordered the dish, puts the food on a different table then picks the dish up again, takes it back to the kitchen then finally brings the dish to customer. This is an organisational issue.

A waiter who doesn’t speak English comletely ignores a foreign customer, then says “no, no” when the customer tries to order by pointing or speaking Vietnamese. This is a lack of effort rather than a communication problem.

I have seen good waitstaff move from restaurant to restaurant with increased pay or even move into restaurant management all because of the extra effort they made to make their customers happy.

Good service is more than just the customer and waiter sharing a common language. The staff at Bread of Life are a perfect example for Vietnamese Home to follow, showing that good service with a smile and a joke can be achieved without any verbal communication at all, all of the waitstaff at Bread of Life are deaf.

I agree with Linh’s original comment in part, I believe it is up to restaurant managers and owners to train staff on how to deal with customers, not just foreign customers, but locals as well. A large portion of responsibility should go the staff themselves, if they have few employment opportunities then it would make sense to make the best effort possible at being good at what they do.
