Once inside the restaurant you can tell that this is not a typical Vietnamese restaurant, the stage, the delicately set tables and the well dressed waiters give a sense of something different. The menu has typical Vietnamese dishes as well as some specialties that are hard to find, the soft shelled crabs are a personal favourite. As you would expect from such a nice looking establishment, the prices aren’t typical either, but in my opinion they are reasonable if you are looking for a special night out.

The stage which is on your right as you enter the first floor is there for the live music performances that begin at about 7pm, with a couple of shows every night. There is also a traditional dance performance. This place is popular with up market tour groups who come here for quite a unique dining experience. It is clear that a lot of effort has been made to make this place stand out from the crowd, the quality of service from the staff is as noticeable as the Cham Tower in the garden.

The restaurant is quite large with seating for three hundred people on two floors. Apsara Restaurant Danang is open daily from 10 to 2.30pm and then again from 5pm to 10pm. It is the perfect place for a romantic dinner for two or the place to take someone you wish to impress. It is across the road from Mumtaz Indian Restaurant and a short walk from the Green Plaza Hotel.

Le Bambino European Restaurant is Danang’s longest running expat owned and managed establishment. Jean Paul and his lovely wife Vinh have been serving guests for over 7 years and have developed a loyal fan base in Danang for fine dining.

Le Bambino is open 7 days a week, from 5pm until the last customer leaves. it is a quiet and calming place tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city, no traffic noise here. The restaurant is a nice and cosy place, suitable for romantic dinners or small dinner parties with close friends.

For this post I will be focusing on Phi Lu 1, on Nguyen Chi Thanh street. It is a large restaurant covering 3 floors with spacious seating and plenty of Chinese vases as decoration. The second floor is air conditioned and there are separate private rooms for groups of up to 50 people.

The menu at Phi Lu Chinese Restaurant is huge with an exhaustive mix of Vietnamese and Chinese dishes. The food is well prepared and usually quick to come to your table, service is good even though little or no English is understood, the uniformed staff are eager to please. Phi Lu is open all day, it doesn’t close down in the afternoon like so many other places making it a good place to come any time of day for a full meal or a quick bite.

I think Phi Lu Chinese Restaurant is a good place to come with a few friends; it has a lively atmosphere with good food and reasonable prices. You are sure to find something to your liking and to agree with your budget.

The Indian manager, Ratheesh, is a very welcoming host and never hesitates to have a chat with his customers and will always do whatever he can to meet your needs. Mumtaz Indian Restaurant is very clean and unlike its other branch in Ho Chi Minh City has an authentic upmarket Indian feel, from the bright colors to the traditional lamps. As well as being a great place to dine, Mumtaz also delivers for free for orders over 100,000 Vietnamese Dong, delivery menus are available from the restaurant.

As you would probably expect from a place serving Indian food, Mumtaz has a fairly equal share of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, including the vegie and non-vegie thali set lunches. I am a big fan of the vegetable curry as well as the vegetarian samosas, the samosas at Mumtaz Indian Restaurant get great reviews from other expats in Danang. All of the usual Indian favorites are also available naans, tandooris, curries, pilaos and tikkas, as well as lassis and Indian teas.

The 300-seat restaurant commands a spacious, high ceilinged venue, featuring an open show kitchen on one side and views of the mountainous Son Tra Peninsula and the East Sea through a bank of expansive windows.

The dining venue’s mix of wood and subdued stone, its tables and plush bench seating and its assertive overhead posts and beams create a setting that is at once relaxed and inspiring.

“As much as we wanted to set the stage for a fine meal, we aimed to design a space as memorable as any in the region,” said Chris Duffy, general director of the Life Resorts. “Once you’ve been here for a meal, you won’t soon forget.”

Especially if you’ve indulged the restaurant’s signature dessert – ice cream brought forth from liquid nitrogen. But… first things first. The hotel’s cuisine trades on its seaside location, offering an array of selections including oysters shucked to order, live surf clams and prawns steamed table-side over hot rocks, as well as local sea bass.

The restaurant’s standard cut of grain-fed Australian Angus steak weighs in at 250 grams trimmed, a good 25% -35% more generous than the typical restaurant cut. Additional selections off the farm include pan-fried duck breast and Australian lamb cutlets. Senses’ Mediterranean selections run the gamut from penne pasta and pappardelle, to risotto, as well as 11 kinds of classic pizza and 11 styles of gourmet pizza, including one five spice ‘pho’ pizza.

After dinner, the restaurant’s food fare kicks into higher gear when diners order liquid nitrogen ice cream. Contrary to the chemistry in its name, liquid nitrogen ice cream is a natural alternative to typical commercial brands. Can all that nitrogen be good for you? No worries, said Executive Chef Shane Brierly: “Nitrogen makes up 78% of the air we breathe. We enjoy nitrogen gas with every breath.”

Moreover, he said ice cream produced by liquid nitrogen eliminates the unnatural stuff that commercial ice cream makers add to the primary ingredients to keep the treat freezer stable and smooth. In the West, an ice cream produced by liquid nitrogen called Dippin’ Dots has won a mass following of new fans.

Prior to Life Resorts, Brierly spent two years in the south of Thailand, including a stint at the Centara in Krabi, and almost five years in the Middle East and Central Asia where, in Kazakhstan, he started using liquid nitrogen for his ice cream.

Ask any of the locals in Danang where is the best place to go for My Quang in the city and the answer will always be the same, My Quang 1A, 01 Hai Phong Street. This place is always busy which is a good sign and I agree with the locals it serves the best My Quang in town.

There are only three options on the menu, which is on the wall, My Quang Ga (chicken) – 18,000VND, My Quang Tom Thit (shrimp and pork) – 21,000VND or My Quang Dac Biet (special: shrimp and pork with egg) – 23,000VND. My personal favourite is the shrimp and pork and of course I have to sprinkle broken Banh Trang (rice cracker – see pictures) over the top of my My Quang.

All of the My Quang diashes are served with banh trang and salad (lettuce and sprouts) which should be mixed in with the My Quang. Mem (boiled pork wrapped in banana leaf) is served before the main dish and makes a good snack while waiting for the My Quang, it can be spicy sometimes.

Chilli paste and fresh green chillis are available on every table certainly add a lot of extra spice to your meal, eat at own risk. So, if you are visiting Danang or even if you live here I insist that you give My Quang 1A a go, let me know if you can find better tasting My Quang.

Located at 248 Tran Phu street is close to the other expat hangouts; Mumtaz Indian Restaurant, Bread of Life and the Bamboo2 Bar. The downstairs bar area looks trendy and is a great place to have a few drinks before or after your meal upstairs. The big screen TV is great for any major sporting events.

Upstairs is tastefully decorated with suitable lighting and soft music. There is also a small balcony for outdoor dining. The menu is not huge but the food I have tried has been excellent, I would go so far as to say it is the best western food available in Danang so far. As well as the excellent food the prices are reasonable.

The staff are wonderful and friendly, a special mention goes to Miss Thu who was very welcoming and helpful with arranging dinner for 10 people. English is spoken by all staff and the staff make an effort to talk with the customers.

It didn’t take long for the Red Sky Bar to develop a loyal following among Danang’s expat community. It has also become a favorite stop off for tourists and Hoi An expats visiting Danang for the day.

The place looks very expensive from the outside but the prices are reasonable and the menu is quite small. Surprisingly there are a few western dishes on the menu: pizza and steak among others. The pizzas are about 120,000 VND.

Long Beach Cafe Danang is certainly trying to market itself as a place for adults to come for coffee or something a bit stronger, it feels very sophisticated. The prices are higher than average but not unreasonable.

The atmosphere, the view and the service make this place good value for money. I haven’t tried the food yet, but considering I live just around the corner I will come here for a meal soon.
