Colin Montgomerie, the eight time European Tour Order of Merit winner and victorious 2010 European Ryder Cup Captain, has launched his very own Colin Montgomerie Junior Challenge, furthering his commitment to the development of golf in Vietnam and Asia at The Montgomerie Links Vietnam.

The Coin Montgomerie designed championship course, voted the best golf course in Vietnam in 2010 by Asian Golf Monthly and Vietnam Golf magazines, will play host to Colin’s inaugural junior event on 21-22 July.  Under the vision of Colin Montgomerie, IMG and The Montgomerie Links, the Colin Montgomerie Junior Challenge is destined to prosper into one of Asia’s premier and most sought after junior titles.

Officially sanctioned by the Vietnam Golf Association and open to all juniors 17 years or age and under with an official golf handicap, this event will provide the necessary platform in which to continue the growth of golf in this passionate sporting nation from a grass roots level. Currently there are only a handful of Vietnamese golfers participating on the  Asian Tour although some are already showing signs of promise.  Getting the necessary experience in tournament play will allow Vietnam to one day proudly develop a national hero in the same fashion as K.J Choi in Korea and Thongchai Jaidee in Thailand. .

The year-old facility beat out other suitors for the country’s most prestigious tournament largely because of its Dunes Course, a rugged, links-style layout designed by golf legend Greg Norman and lauded by a suite of the world’s most influential golf publications.

“I think Golf Digest Singapore said it best when it said the course was ‘as close as you’ll ever come (in Asia) to the UK’s great links courses,’” said Howie Roberts, general manager of Danang GC. “Having come from Wales and grown up playing those great links courses, I think that comparison is spot-on and deserved. It’ll be fun to see how this region’s best young players negotiate the course’s challenges.”

Organized by the VGA, the Vietnam Amateur Open is a four-day, 72-hole event that attracted a record 134 men from Southeast Asia last year. The VGA expects at least that many competitors when this year’s edition commences June 9.

“Dalat Palace Golf Club served as a wonderful venue the past three years,” said VGA Secretary General Nguyen Ngoc Chu, who is also chairman of the tournament’s organizing committee. “And perhaps the tournament will return to Dalat at some point. But it’s Danang Golf Club’s turn to shine, and I think it will.”

Opened on Liberation Day last year, the Dunes Course is Norman’s first creation in Vietnam and arguably his finest anywhere, routed as it is through rough-hewn sand dunes that trundle down to a stretch of beach Forbes magazine voted one of the world’s 10 most luxurious in 2005.

The club also features a US $5 million, 4,000-square-metre clubhouse designed by award-winning Australian architectural firm Hassell; and a spectacular practice facility that includes a a 1,600-square-metre chipping/putting green and a driving range angled toward the stunning Marble Mountains.

Called the Vietnam National Championship until 2007, the Vietnam Amateur is open to any non-professional living in Vietnam, Vietnamese non-professionals residing abroad and one non-professional under the age of 23 from other ASEAN nations. Players must also have handicaps of 9 or better to be eligible.

At the same time the men are duking it out, the region’s top young female golfers will compete in the Vietnam Ladies National Championship.

Cut lines will be determined after the second rounds on Friday, June 10. The remaining ladies will play one more round to determine a champion, while the outstanding men will play two.

The winners will hoist their trophies at an award’s presentation Sunday afternoon, June 12. Both the prize ceremony and the men’s final round will be broadcast live on VTV television.

“Our clubhouse just opened and we’re fast approaching our first birthday,” said Howie Roberts, Danang GC’s general manager. “What better way to celebrate than with a tournament for all the people — members, their guests, and even non-members — who have supported us since last May, when play started on the Dunes Course?”

Designed in the true spirit of the game by former world No. 1 golfer Greg Norman, the rugged and rolling Dunes Course has already been called “jaw-dropping” by HK Golfer magazine and “as close as you’ll ever come (in Asia) to the UK’s great links courses” by Golf Digest Singapore.

In December, the US edition of GOLF Magazine — the most prestigious golf publication in the world — voted Danang GC one of the top 15 courses to open worldwide in 2010.

“For many players, the club championship represents the first opportunity to experience for themselves what the international golf press has been raving about,” said Roberts. “It’s going to be fun to watch them and talk to them and put on a fantastic tournament for them.”

More than 100 golfers are expected to compete across four stroke-play divisions in the Inaugural DGC Club Championship, which also serves as a qualifier for the prestigious MercedesTrophy Vietnam Final.

On both days, play begins with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. The event concludes with an awards ceremony Sunday afternoon.

That’s because, for the first time, one of the country’s golf courses — The Dunes Course at Danang Golf Club — made the kind of prestigious list every golf club from Danang to Dornoch strives to be on.
