The Waterfront Restaurant Danang is internationally owned and managed and provides fine Western cuisine, there are plans to serve Vietnamese cuisine soon.

The bar has more than 30 top wines on the wine list and the largest beer selection in central Vietnam. Of course no bar would be complete without great cocktails. There is a Happy Hour every night from 5.30pm to 6.30pm – Buy 1 drink get 1 free.

As you can see from the photos The Waterfront Restaurant Bar looks fantastic, has wonderful decor and is spacious enough to provide a venue for live music on special occasions.

When compiling this list I had to think about what makes a bar a “bar”. I think you will agree that most of the places on this list lack several elements that a true “bar” should have: wide range of beers, pool, darts and good music are essential. In Danang you can’t be too fussy and can’t expect too much, with time and a larger expat community I am sure more bars and better bars will come along.

This post is an updated version of a list I created in November 2009. There are some new additions to the list as well as a few places that no longer exist. As always if you have any places to add to this list please do so in the comments.

The Chill Out Cafe is holding another quiz night this Sunday, May 22. The theme for this quiz is “The 60′s” and will include questions about music, movies, celebrities, politics and important events that occurred during the sixties.

The Chill Out Cafes second quiz will be expanded to include up to 6 teams of 3 to 5 members per team. It is preferred that teams are registered by the 21st May, late registrations on Quiz Day will be accepted. The quiz will include 3 rounds of 12 questions each and 1 table game.

The first round of questions will be questions asked by the quiz master and the answers will be recorded by each team on an answer sheet. The second round will be audio questions, Teams will listen to 10 seconds of 10 songs from the sixties and will get one point for the name of the song and one point for the name of the band or singer.

The third round will be a speed round, one member from each team will have the opportunity to respond the fastest to general questions regarding all topics of the sixties quiz. The winning team will be the team with the most correct answers from the three rounds and the table game and will receive prizes valued at over 500,000VND.

The 60′s Quiz Night will also feature drink specials including “3 cocktails for 100,000VND”. There will also be quiz questions for audience members who are not registered with a team. Bring your business card for your chance to win our lucky draw.

The original Bamboo Bar had been somewhere in Danang for over 10 years but for some reason was mostly only known to people who lived in Danang, it was difficult to find for travellers. The current Bamboo2 Bar has a great location and is easy to find as a result there is a much broader mix of patron, expats, backpackers, businessmen and even a loyal Vietnamese following. The Bamboo2 Bar is owned by the lovely Diem, niece of the original bamboo owners and a friend to most expats in Danang, she is always up for a chat and on hand to offer advice about things to do in Danang.

The bar generally doesn’t open until after 5pm although sometimes you may see chairs out front early in the afternoon meaning an early opening time. Closing times are mostly dependent on the customers, Diem will more often than not stay open until the last customer leaves.

The bar is very basic, with graffiti from past patrons on the wall, bamboo bar stools and a sturdy old pool table that always seems to be busy. Western music is always playing and you can even pick out some songs from the extensive itunes selection or make a request to Diem. The staff are fun and friendly and speak English better than most other waitresses you will find in Danang.

To get away from Danang’s very Vietnamese feel, the Bamboo2 Bar and is a great escape to hear some decent music, have a chat with expats in Danang or just to escape the constant Vietnamese chatter.

Live Music Monday: The Waterfront Danang features live music on most Monday evenings with acoustic performances in the bar. The music starts at 8pm with Mis Lis performing a mix of her own songs and cover versions of other great tunes.

Le Funk Danang has a couple of sofas out front which are a great place to people watch while enjoying a drink in the early evening. The French owners always have a good music playing and the few times I have been here there has been a small group of friendly expats to chat with.

Le Funk opens at 2 in the afternoon and closes late. I think it is a good place to visit with a couple of friends and it always seems to be busy after 9pm.

The restaurant on the second floor is spacious, probably with enough seating for 40 people and it is quiet, something that is hard to find in a Vietnamese restaurant. The menu is a mix of Vietnamese, Western and Japanese dishes, the Vietnamese owner is married to a Japanese man. As you would expect from a place that calls itself a bar there is a large drinks selection, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. All menu items are priced in dollars so be aware of the current rate and ask the rate the Cool Spot is charging on that particular day.

One of the big draws of this place is that you can get things here that you can’t find elsewhere in Danang, battered fish and chips, chicken Cordon Bleu, BBQ pork ribs or pumpkin soup. They also do very decent pizzas, good burgers and sandwiches, curries and of course good Vietnamese, but why would you come to a Western restaurant to eat Vietnamese food? There Japanese selection is quite large, judging by the number of Japanese customers I assume that the Japanese food is just well cooked as the Western dishes.

The Cool Spot Restaurant & Bar used to be the base for the Danang Hash House Harriers, I think the last run was organized more than 6 months ago and there seem to be no active participants these days. It is a good place to come for information about Danang, staff can help you find a motorbike for rent are also helpful if you are looking for a place to rent. The staff are very friendly and helpful and speak English quite well as does the owner, Mai.

The bar downstairs doesn’t really count as a bar in my opinion due to the fact that it has no music. Patrons spend their time chatting or watching TV, no pool, no dart board. So, if you are looking for some Western food to escape the daily monotony of rice this is the place to come with a small group, downstairs is a good place to have a drink or two before or after your meal.

Danang’s number 1 expat hangout is currently out of order and undergoing renovations. Renovations are expected to take more than a week but once complete will provide a lot if extra space for Danang’s expat community.

The construction work will make use of the neighboring block of land making the once narrow bar quite a bit wider. As well more space inside, the front of the bar will be moved a few meters in, allowing for outdoor seating that won’t violate Danang’s silly no outdoor seating rule.

The only details I have are the address, 166 Bach Dang street, there will be a dj playing tonight and there is also rumor of a free cocktail on arrival. Everything is expected to get going about 8pm so it may be quiet if you get there any earlier, I assume the bar is open late.
