Five days after typhoon Ketsana hit and the cleanup in Danang still continues. The streets in the city centre are almost back to normal with the only evidence of a storm is the piles of rubbish that have been collected still waiting to be picked up and removed.
Along the beach the army has been out scraping tonnes of sand from the road and removing debris from the beach. The locals too are out cleaning up collecting wood and other debris. Cyclo drivers have been kept busy removing rubbish, sign companies I suspect are also doing a good trade as many businesses rush to get signs destroyed in the storm replaced.
The mood around town seems to be that the storm wasn’t as bad as expected as wasn’t as bad as Typhoon Xangsane of 2006. Typhoon Ketsana however hit over a larger area, was a longer storm and caught some people unaware, Ketsana’a death toll stands at more than 100 (in Vietnam), Xangsane claimed 71 lives in Vietnam. The winds however didn’t seem too powerful and didn’t cause as much structural damage as Typhoon Xangsane in 2006.
