The Ocean Club: New Name and New Direction

The Ocean Club WAS quite well known among Danang’s expat community, for mostly the wrong reasons. The Ocean Club has a fantastic location, right on the sand, with a garden area, nice undercover seating, beach chairs on the sand and good facilities. Despite all of these promising features the Ocean Club WAS such a disappointment.

All of that may be about to change as the Ocean Club, now called Temple Danang – Ocean Side Water Sports Lounge is under new management and is moving in a new direction.

After just one month in his new Job, Chris has slowly started to transform the place. Tiger and San Miguel Draft, happy hours, better trained staff and decent music are just a few of the changes.

HAPPY HOURS!
The new happy hours at Temple Danang are quite long and cater well to those looking to relax in the afternoon or to enjoy a late night drink.
2pm to 5pm and 9pm to 11pm everyday – 10% of all food and beverage.

NEW AND IMPROVED MENU
As well as having plenty of experience in Vietnam, Chris is also a trained chef so is in the process of revamping the menu. So far it all looks quite good, the English breakfast comes highly recommended.

CUSTOMER LOYALTY PROGRAM
Temple Danang – Ocean Side Water Sports Lounge, is also looking to start a customer loyalty program by rewarding repeat customers with big discouunts on watersports available at the Temple Danang throughout the summer.

Temple Danang – Ocean Side Water Sports Lounge
Hours: 7am to 11pm, 7 days a week.
Address: On the beach road, turn left at the end of Pham Van Dong.

I don’t think the owners are at all concerned about running a good restaurant or turning a profit. Think it is a long term investment and they can’t be bothered to train their staff. I agree with everything in the article, especially with the appalling service. You have to get up and walk all the way to the bar to get the attention of a “waitress”. Little advice, insist that they bring one of the buckets with ice for your beer so you don’t have to rely on them!

Thanks for the tip Patrick. I understand the long term investment but I think with a little training they could also turn a profit in the short term. As well as provide something of value to the Danang community.

Many of us have been going to Nga’s, Loc Chau, for years when she was on the beach. Nga is a young widow with 3 small children. Miss Loc, her mother in law, has been a friend to Americans since the war. Nga is like part of some of our families. There has to be a real good reason to go to the Ocean Club and so far, I haven’t been compelled to return.

I passed this place a few times but never got the urge to go into it. Maybe its the surrounding business around it turns me away. I’m never a fan of all those fancy restaurant along the coast. From reading your review above, this place can learn a few lesson from a successful bar in Nha Trang – Louisiana Bar. From judging the outside of the Ocean Club, it has a similar layout as the bar in Nha Trang. The bar in Nha Trang provides live music on certain days, great food, and a spot to mingle on the beach.

I disagree with the author about ocean club. It’s November here in Da Nang and I’m dining here with my wife at Ocean Club. The food and drinks tastes, by far, better than any restaurant out in downtown Da Nang. It has a relaxing atmosphere with a beautiful view of the ocean and coconut trees surrounding the restaurant. We went and rented the beach chairs (50,000 dong apiece) for the whole day and relaxed on the beach. At first we were hesitant to go here after 2 drive bys but snooped in after going to other places and were not satisfied at the food and services. Ocean Club has very well trained and kind staffs. They are not like what Mr. Lee has describes as “untrained.” well manner and
helpful. As for entertainment, there is a lack of but I don’t mind. It’s peaceful and beautiful. Try it out before you judge
    this place.

Hi all. I read these comments with much interest. My name is Chris Ephgrave. I have been the general manager for Rainbow Divers Viet Nam for the last few years, based in Nha Trang. On the 01 November I became the new manager of Ocean Club Da Nang. I have a background in bar/restaurant and of course diving/watersports.

I would very much agree with the general concerns raised previous – I will make no claim that these can be radicaly changed on a sixpence. Though progress is being made. I can assure you already – all beer is now super chilled, served from a super chilled glass. The layout is a little less “canteen” and staff training is under way – you do at least have some one to voice your concerns to in English.

On the way – Tiger draught, full range of spirits including
JD and a vastly simplified menu to be installed, including all the crowd favourites. With a little luck you should reasonably expect a quality, well served ocean view lounge by the end of the month. I can also predict a very satisfactory night spot for the weekends in December.

Feel free to pop by and give me your thoughts/wishes and feedback and I promise, if nothing else I will add it to the very long list.

As a final note for now. I can inform esteemed users of indanang.com that the Ocean club will shortly announce a new name.

Catch you all via FB, Twitter, G+ and most importantly over a cold beer on T20 very soon I hope.

I have been to the Ocean Club a couple of times. The service was very poor the first time, none of the staff ever bothered to come down to the beds on the beach I had to go up to the bar for service. The pizza was the worst I have ever had. Some weeks later I returned to see if it was just a bad day but nothing had changed. Its a pity because it is in a great location and could be the best place for entertainment/relaxation in Da nang.

I had a few hours spare before my flight from Da Nang to HCMC and decided to check out the Temple Club – The view was amazing, great service, good food all at a very reasonable price. I will be returning for sure! Louisiana Bar in Nha Trang is a step up but Temple is on its way up and have improved a great deal if any of the older comments are an indication of past experiences. Check the place out for yourself.
