Hoa’s Place has been running for more than 15 years and is still in the same location, serves the same food and provides the same basic accommodation that it did 15 years ago. Of course it is still run by Hoa and his lovely wife Giao who are so friendly and helpful.
On first arriving at Hoa’s it may come as a surprise to learn that quite a few people choose to spend so much time here, a couple of days or even a couple of weeks. And even more people still return here again and again, what is it that draws people here?
It’s not the menu, the selection is small and the food is tasty, especially Giao’s famous spring rolls. It’s not the accommodation which is cheap, from $6 a night, but very basic. It’s not the spectacular beach, China Beach is 100m from Hoa’s doorstep and is usually deserted and peaceful. It’s not the cheap beer, I’m not sure the beer prices have changed in 15 years.
The answer is simple, it’s the atmosphere, Hoa has created a vibe all his own and it attracts other people who want share and enjoy this atmosphere and “take it easy” as Hoa will tell time and time again. Hoa’s Place is super laid back and relaxing.
There is no fear of being ripped off when you make your own bill, it runs on an honour system, you ask for food or get yourself a beer then write it in the book, the total is added at the end of your stay. Coming here after a few days in Hoi An is a welcome change, no hassles nobody trying sell you a new suit.
The Marble Mountains are only a ten minute walk away and are great place to get some exercise exploring the caves and temples. Getting lost in the caves makes it easy to see how the North Vietnamese could have hospital here, right under and American Military post during the war.
Most people spend their day at Hoa’s wandering between the beach and Hoa’s Place, sunbathing, reading, swimming or chatting to Hoa and other travellers. It is a great place to share information and to make new friends, expats in the area also make it a regular stopover on the way to Hoi An or Danang.
For the entire time I have known Hoa and been visiting Hoa’s Place there have been plans to knock it down. Evidence of these plans can be seen in the resorts that are springing up between Hoi An and Danang. So far Hoa has escaped demolition and remains in the same location, when he moves I will let you know. Even if Hoa does move, he is adamant that he will set up somewhere else, and he will take his vibe with him.
