English Schools In Danang

May 16, 2012

English Schools In DanangI think it used to be true that English teachers made up the majority of Danang’s expat community I don’t think that is still true, however there are still quite a few English teachers in Danang. Surprisingly, over the last couple of years, the number of English schools in Danang hasn’t increased dramatically like in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.

As of now I think there are only 7 language centers that employ foreign English teachers. Here they are in no particular order.

ILA – 66 Vo Van Tan Street
One of Vietnam’s largest language centers with schools all over the country. ILA is more likely to transfer teachers from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi rather than hire somebody already in Danang. They cater mostly to kids classes but also have adult and corporate programs.

ELI – 41 Le Duan Street
The new kid on the block and established by Queensland University, ELI certainly has the nicest building of any language center in the city. This place is probably the most exclusive language school with high prices for students and as such high demand from its teachers.

APOLLO – 81 Quang Trung Street
Apollo has a similar story to that of ILA with massive expansion in recent years, it has been in Vietnam for over 10 years and has schools nationwide. Apollo teaches a mix of childrens, adults and corporate classes and has mostly full time teachers who work exclusively for Apollo.

VATC – 85-87 Nguyen Van Linh Street
Vietnamese American Training College is a Vietnamese owned and managed school and probably has more centers than any other language school in the country. The Danang branch is in the center of town and caters to the middle classes with reasonable prices and a mix of foreign and local teachers.

AVIEC – 288 Nguyen Van Linh Street
American Vietnamese International English center has recently moved to Nguyen Van Linh street, it is quite small and employs a handful of foreign teachers who work alongside local staff. It runs a range of classes, IELTS, TOEIC, general English and kids classes on the weekends.

HONG DUC English Center- 104/9 Le Dinh Ly Street
This school is relatively unknown and new to the business of employing foreign teachers. The owner is friendly and eager to please with a reasonable salary and modern facilities. The focus here is mostly on academic English and test preparation for students wishing to study abroad.

FISHER’S SUPERKIDS – 99 Nguyen Van Linh Street
As the name suggests this school caters to young learners and requires that its teachers be energetic and enthusiastic. It used to rely on volunteer teachers but now hires teachers and pays a reasonable wage.

If you know of any other schools in Danang that hire foreign teachers please add them to the comments below.

There is also English4Kids at 74 Pasteur Street and 74 Van Cao Street. They have been around for quite a bit and growing very fast (more than a thousand pupils now I heard).
They are always looking for foreign part time teachers to do (mostly) review lessons. Usual requirements of being enthusiastic, energetic and good with small children, on top of being native English speakers, of course.
The pay rate is quite decent and the kids are very well behaved. Pop in to have a chat with Ms Huong or Ms Kim if you are interested.

I believe I am the only free teacher of English (speaking and pronunciation) in Da Nang. I am not a school and only tutor advanced students, usually one on one. They claim to have been able to go on to better jobs or abroad for further education or higher IELTS scores. Problem is I only do it when I am here and at my house which is at 51 Thanh Long St. My local phone is 0902047974. I am very picky who I chose to take on as a student and have recently “fired” 2 students because they were not prepared to learn which must be their choice of materials and they no showed or canceled twice.

HI we are looking to move to Danang early next year – are there many English teaching jobs (we have TESOL) and what is the average hourly rate?
    thanks

    Wood-
There are roughly 40 English schools in Danang, so it’s really not too difficult to find at least part time jobs, even with several different schools at once. Most schools pay between $10-$15/hour with the average being $12, even for first time teachers. My husband and I are currently teaching at 3 different schools and subbing at an International school as well, and it is working out for us, so..best of luck!

Hi there I am living in HCMC at the moment teaching at a local college but they are laying off teachers. I would like to move out of the city to somewhere quieter. Are there any schools there where I can teach adults. I know IELTS and business English. Also the salary of 10-15 is much lower than HCMC is that really the average!

Madje: Da Nang is not an expensive place to stay as HCM that’s why the living expense is kinda low compare to big city like HCM or Ha Noi. However, it’s a quieter place that important to you or the salary so consider twice about it though. I’ll move to DN too & it’s my 1st time there that’s why I see comments here are so helpful.

@ Madje: It depends on which center you’ll choose. In Danang I think Apollo and ILA are biggest so you can contact with them about part-time jobs. I recommend you Danang is very quiet and beautiful city, moreover the living expense is very cheap though. No doubt that moving to Danang city is your best decision

Are there any age restrictions for ESL teachers and will that affect getting a work visa ?
Should I have a work visa before coming to Vietnam ? Is that possible ?
Has anyone moved to Danang to teach and found it difficult to get enough work to live ?
What would be an average monthly cost to live somewhat frugally in the area ? I may have to fund myself while putting something together.
    Thanks

Da Nang is not cheaper than Hanoi or Saigon. Da Nang is more expensive so you should definitely get paid from 15-25/h and not 10-12 unless you are not a native teacher and don’t have a teaching certificate. If you are looking for a place to stay, expect to pay twice more than a place in Saigon or Hanoi. Still, I would rather live here than in the main cities
    Good luck!
