For those of you who have spent time in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City you will be familiar with Co-op Mart, it is a very Vietnamese style supermarket chain. Co-op mart Danang has been open for a couple of weeks and I was pleasantly surprised by what the supermarket had in stock as well as the other stores that are in same complex.
Except for the lack of a Cinema I would say that the new Co-op Mart centre in Danang has more to offer than the Big C complex. Both Lotteria and KFC have new branches and there is also a Fahasa on the third floor. The floor is also home to a large bowling alley, at least 10 lanes and a games arcade much bigger than the one in Big C.
There is also a food court on the third floor with mostly Vietnamese food available and a place serving freshly squeezed juices. Pappa Roti also has a small stall here and I was very satisfied with their bun, billed as “the father of all buns” it lived up to the hype, the donut like bun was delicious.
I also believe that the new Co-op Mart in Danang is home to the city’s first electronic motorbike parking. Instead of the standard paper ticket and chalk number on your bike, you are given a barcoded ticket which is swiped and includes your licence plate number, it is then swiped when you leave, parking costs 1,000 VND.
Shopping at Co-op Mart is a much more Vietnamese experience than Big C or Metro, I got quite a few stares and giggles. I think the upside of this is that some things are cheaper, the product range is very similar to what is available at Big C, Big C is cleaner and more spacious though.
