Well, as I write this, 2pm on 30/09/2009, Danang is still cleaning up after Typhoon Ketsana. The storm began on Monday at noon and finally started to ease off early Wednesday morning for relieved Danang residents. Twenty three people have been confirmed dead in central Vietnam, deaths were reported in Thua Thien Hue, Danang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai and Kon Tum.
The storm hit land just south of Hoi An with winds of upto 140 kph, more than 170,000 people were evacuated before the typhoon reached land. Mountainous inland areas have been cut off by landslides.
Here in Danang, power supplies were cut for approximately 36 hours, water supplies were also halted for short periods, flooding has been minimal. The most common site in the streets are damaged shop signs and trees scattered across the roads.
The beach road is still covered by sand as strong winds continue to hamper clean up efforts. It was not surprising though to see locals going about their business as usual, shops are open, cafes are doing a brisk trade and the market is as busy as ever.
Here is a video recorded from The Nam Hai resort in Quang Nam province which appeared on CNN’s iReport.
